I recently participated in a Facebook "love me" challenge in a mom's group. I quickly noticed a recurring theme on the posts of women through the ages of 20-50's. Many went back to the births of their children. Whether it was a day to post about what made them unique, what they were proud of, what fears they overcame or something they did right. So many of them shared their births. Why is this?
As women who bring forth life into this world birth matters. Birth is strong. Birth is powerful. Birth unleashes power many women did not know they had. Birth changes us. It does stay with you through your life. You will remember your birth stories whether good, bad, happy or sad. You will remember little or in great detail. Yes, it may matter personally to you whether you had a natural birth, medicated birth, vaginal birth, or cesarean birth.
Knowing this, that birth is so important, ask yourself, how are you going to prepare for this amazing, life changing, best story of your life event? Not do anything? Hope you get out what you want with no preparation or support? Or are you going to educate yourself? Plan? Read? Hire a doula? Hire a midwife? Have a planned family centered cesarean? Have an epidural? Have an un-medicated vaginal birth? Whatever you choose to do, find your amazing support early and plan for your birth mattering for the rest of your life. Choose the team who will support you, encourage you, respect you, love you, advocate for your desires and wishes, honor you and nurture you.
